Medieval Aesthetic with Modern Twist
Designing the UI for Medieval required a delicate balance between historical authenticity and modern usability. The game's setting during the Hussite wars in early 15th-century Bohemia demanded a visual language that resonated with the era's ambiance.
To achieve this, I studied medieval manuscripts, architecture, and artifacts. This informed the creation of UI elements that featured textures reminiscent of aged parchment, iron-forged icons, and wood-carved frames. The color palette was carefully selected to reflect the earthy tones of the period, enhancing the immersive experience.
Collaborating closely with the 3D art team, we ensured consistency across the game's visual elements. Our efforts culminated in the design of battlegrounds like the Courtyard and Tavern, introduced in the December 2023 update, which showcased our commitment to expanding the medieval asset collection for future level designs .

Player Testing and Tuning
Given Medieval's unique blend of geolocation, deck-building, and turn-based strategy, creating intuitive user flows was really important. We began with low-fidelity wireframes to map out core interactions, focusing on clarity and ease of navigation.
These wireframes underwent user testing during the closed alpha phase, starting in May 2023 . Feedback highlighted areas for improvement, such as the need for clearer ability descriptions and more responsive interactions. In response, we refined the UI to include features like floating combat text and informative icons, enhancing the player's understanding of in-game actions.
Subsequent updates, including patch 0.1.1 in October 2023, addressed issues like prolonged attack animations and UI freezes . By iteratively testing and refining the UI, we ensured that players could navigate the game's complexities with ease, resulting in a more engaging and accessible experience.
Full Marketing Support
Beyond in-game UI design, I played a pivotal role in shaping Medieval's marketing visuals to captivate and inform potential players. Recognizing the importance of a cohesive visual identity, I developed promotional materials that echoed the game's medieval theme.
This included designing banners for the store page that highlighted upcoming features, as well as creating assets for social media and community engagement platforms . These visuals not only attracted new players but also kept the existing community informed and excited about ongoing developments.
I ensured that all promotional content maintained visual consistency with the game's aesthetic. This holistic approach to design reinforced Medieval's brand identity and contributed to its growing player base.
